Book Sale Proceeds
Have you wondered where the proceeds from the Book Sales go? Every year, thanks to our shoppers from near and far, FOL is able to provide financial and materials support to the Alachua County Library District and to community organizations focused on literacy. Here are a few examples of how your support makes a difference in our community:
- Direct support to ACLD:
- the purchase of books, media and other materials for the Library’s collection
- enhancement of the District’s physical locations, including property for future Branch expansion and Quiet Reading Rooms in all Branches
- author visits, writing workshops, reading festivals, art shows and other special programming & events for children, teens and adults, not covered in the Library’s annual budget
- literacy tutor training and materials for a range of reading and language-learning programs around the County
- Financial & materials support for ACLD’s Community Partners, focusing on:
- early literacy
- parental engagement
- home visitation and home book delivery
- after-school enrichment and tutoring
- community festivals and cultural arts events promoting literacy, books, and reading
- FOL’s Educational Assistance Fund, providing financial support to Library staff pursuing higher education
Don’t forget the cost of running two sales each year, while maintaining our more-than-100-year-old building to ensure the safety of our all-volunteer workforce and shoppers like you.
What happens to materials left-over after the sales? Following each book sale, we offer unsold materials to local and regional nonprofit organizations engaged in literacy work. Unsold or unsellable, but still readable, items are also donated to Little Free Libraries, schools, and other nonprofit organizations.
